Saffron Restaurant & Bakery situates itself comfortably on East Bay Street in Charleston, offering a blend of Persian flavors with classic café and casual dining vibes. It’s the kind of spot that appeals to locals and visitors looking for a hearty breakfast, a relaxed lunch, or a dessert fix all in one place. The wide-ranging menu—from falafel with hummus and koobideh kabobs to shrimp and grits—makes it clear that this isn’t a narrowly focused eatery but rather a gathering point for those craving a little variety without pretension.

The atmosphere is straightforward and unassuming, fitting for a downtown staple that’s been a part of Charleston’s food scene for decades. Expect a mix of seating options, including outdoor tables that catch the bustle of the French Quarter neighborhood. It’s a place where couples, small groups, and solo diners can feel at ease settling in, whether for a casual bite or a late afternoon coffee and pastry break. The bakery section, connected to the restaurant, draws people in with treats like baklava, caramel pecan cheesecake, and chocolate croissants—though those needing detailed allergy info might find that part a bit unclear.

Patrons tend to appreciate the generous portion sizes and a menu that balances Mediterranean specialties alongside familiar café fare like avocado toast and classic sandwiches. The lamb and eggplant stew and house-made gyros stand out to those who come searching for something with more regional flair, underscoring the Persian roots that flavor much of the kitchen’s offerings. While the experience might not lean toward upscale dining, it delivers good value and solid, fresh ingredients that many have remarked on, especially locals who prioritize a dependable lunch spot with some Mediterranean authenticity.

Service feels friendly and efficient, often described as attentive without being overbearing—a helpful quality in a place that can get lively during peak hours. Wine is available, and the pricing remains surprisingly competitive for Charleston standards, which makes it a convenient stop after exploring the nearby historic streets.

Overall, Saffron fits best into days when you want a down-to-earth meal with a side of bakery treats, in a spot where the vibe encourages lingering, whether you're fueling up for a day of sightseeing or seeking a neighborhood spot for casual conversations and comfort food. Afternoons and early evenings, especially with some outdoor seating, offer a glimpse into Charleston’s mix of locals and tourists enjoying approachable flavors rooted in tradition.

Had lunch outside. Service was very good. Food was also very good. My wife had the Mediterranean salad with salmon and I ordered the turkey club with fries. We also visited the bakery, but had a difficult time getting a definitive answer on what was dairy free. We visited the next evening and I purchased a piece of New York style cheesecake. It wasn't as thick and heavy as I would have hoped. I would get something else if I went back. Overall a good experience and I would recommend it.

A Charleston staple on East Bay. Been around for decades, strong value play! Entrees around $20, glasses of wine 6-10. Ill say that again - glassed of wine around $8- when was the last time anybody has heard of that in 2025!? Very diverse menu, huge amount of desserts. Not the most high end in town, but not trying to be. Worth a try for a casual meal or dessert. Hard to call yourself a local without stopping by at least once.

Everything about the food was great. As an Iranian who makes kebabs at home, it’s not easy for me to praise restaurant kebabs — but this one was impressive! The portion size was right, and the texture and flavor of the meat were just spot on. The only downside was the lack of sumac, which I think is a pretty important part of the experience. After a long time, I had Doogh (yogurt drink) again — it was good, but not amazing. The atmosphere was very interesting, and you can also buy Iranian groceries from their store. Overall, it was a delicious and satisfying experience. I just wish they had sumac too!

On our last day in Charleston, we tried this place a half mile from our hotel in the French quarter. We had seen it earlier in the week on our way to the aquarium. Hands down some of the best Mediterranean food we have had in quite some time. The portions were huge. The ingredients were fresh. The three of us ate off two ordered meals and still had left overs. One server for the entire dining room, however he handled us and others quite fine. Never missed a beat. One star down on atmosphere as it’s a bit dated and could stand a fresh coat of paint per see. For a casual restaurant it could be a 5 star though. Just depends on how you want to grade it.

Ordered the Reuben sandwich with onion rings, a side salad with ginger dressing & the She Crab Soup. The sandwich was “eh.” It needed something. Added salt, which helped, but still needed something. The soup was fabulous. It came with a roll, which was tasty and great dipped in the soup. The salad was absolutely fabulous! It had fresh mushrooms, spinach, avocado, tomato & cucumbers. Our waitress was simply wonderful, friendly, outgoing, helpful and very chatty, which we liked. To us, that makes our experience more personal. We didn’t get pastries since we ate dinner, but they looked very yummy.
